The article presents the results of the pilot study related to the levels of transport university students’ readiness for innovative professional activity. The experiment was aimed at determining effectiveness of the proven competence technology identifying students’ readiness for innovative professional activity. The pilot study consisted of the summative and formative experiments and was attended by students of Samara State Transport University (second to fifth year) specializing in Railway Rolling Stock; pilot and control groups were formed of the students participating in the experiment. Those belonging to the pilot group were taught according to the innovative competence technology, whereas control group students followed traditional pedagogical technology. At the initial stage of the summative experiment both qualitative and quantitative body of the control and pilot groups was identical, which proved representativeness of the body of the groups to be compared. The criteria for evaluating the levels of students’ readiness for innovative professional activity have been developed, which are indirectly defined through identifying the levels of readiness of its cognitive, operational and pragmatic components. To measure readiness of the abovementioned components the authors use packets of tests, each consisting of ten control questions; results are scored on a 100-point system and divided according to three levels: high level, enhanced level and basic level. Numerical integrative values demonstrating students’ readiness for innovative professional activity are defined as the sum of the levels proving the development of cognitive, operational and pragmatic components with relating weight numbers. The results of the pilot study demonstrate that the number of students belonging to the pilot group and showing developed readiness for innovative professional activity is seven times as many as that of the control group at a high level and 5.6 times as many as that of the control group at the enhanced level. These experimental data prove high efficiency and usefulness of applying the competence technology in order to foster students’ readiness for innovative professional activity.
